About The Artist: Stefan Martin

Stefan Martin, an artist noted for his wood engravings, drowned on Oct. 7 in Assunpink Lake in Millstone Township, N.J. He was 58 and lived in Roosevelt, N.J. Was a graphic artist who lived in Roosevelt, New Jersey along with his father, David Stone Martin(1913-1992), another graphic artist and illustrator; Ben Shahn (1898-1969), Jacob Landau and Gregorio Prestopino(1907-1984); all prominent American artists living in the same town. About The Medium: Woodcut

A relief process in which the image is cut in a block of wood with tools such as knives, goughers or chisels. The image is inked with a roller, paper is applied to the surface and the back is then rubbed by hand or with a rubbing tool, transferring the image to the paper.
