about Herman Miller Summer Picnic - 2006

In 1970 graphic designer Stephen Frykholm started working at Herman Miller, the iconic furniture designer.

He was tasked with creating a poster for the summer sweet corn festival and company picnic. What he created was a bold pop art poster that became famous for his smart design and bold bright colors. This poster was created by his team at Herman Miller, starting in 1989 he did not directly create the posters.

About The Artist: Stephen Frykholm

Stephen Frykholm born 1942 in Seattle Washington. After his Peace Corps service in Nigeria in the mid-1960s, Stephen Frykholm earned an M.F.A. degree in 1969 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Since 1970 he has been employed as a graphic designer by furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, Inc., of Zeeland, Michigan, and is currently the chief creative officer for its subsidiary, Miller SQA.
