Cortland Butterfield is perhaps best known as a figurative painter, though he also painted still lifes, florals, and marine subjects. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and studied at Cooper-Union Art School, the Art Students League, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
