About the artist:

Gustavo Zalamea is a Colombian artist. Throughout his career, Zalamea's work has been recognized with many awards. In 1976 he was invited to take part in the Salón Atenas at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, and in 1977 received an Icetex grant to study contemporary art in Italy. He was a finalist in the 1980 Proceso "Nueva Imagen" contest with a book of drawings, "Los Papeles de la Tierra" (Earth Papers), and in 1982 won the Mexican national contest of the Fondo Cultural Cafetero for a mural in the Edifício Leónidas Londoño de Manizales. Other important awards include first prize in the 30th Salón de Artistas Colombianos (1986); the Medalla Americana in the 1989 Biennial of Graphic Art at the La Tertulia Museum in Cali, Colombia; first prize in painting in the 1989 Francia Colombia Contest 1789-1989; and the 1989 Simón Bolívar National Journalism Prize for design, shared with the newspaper, “La Prensa”. Zalamea also received the 1993 national prize for graphic design from the National Museum of Colombia. He has taught art since 1994, when he joined the Faculty of Arts of the National University of Colombia as an associate professor.
