About the artist:

Leo Bates was born in Pittsburgh Pa., 1944. He studed at the Carnegie Mellon Universty. Pittsburgh. 1962 - 1966 and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting. He was a special student at Yale Universty Summer SchooL, Norfolk, Conn. 1965 in 1968 he moved to New York City where The now paints. In 1974 he received a grant for painting through the New York Slate Council on the Arts, Creative Artists Public Service Program. A talented American artist, Leo's paintings are well recognized for their being based on computer algorithms. His "trompel'oeil" technique sometimes employed the philosophical underpinnings of mathematical fractals, but are breathtakingly visual. A painter's painter, Leo received six gold keys for art by Scholastic Magazine while still in high school. His artwork was shown at the Whitney Museum Art Resource Center, and the renown Albright Knox Museum of American Art in Buffalo, NY. Leo Bates died in 2013 of Lung Cancer.
