Monica Shulman

American (1977)

About the artist:

Monica Shulman, an abstract expressionist painter and photographer, uses her love of bold color to express feelings of freedom and unapologetic honesty in her work. Her art is energetic and playful and reflects her interest in flawed beauty rather than perfection. She often creates work improvisationally, using heavy sculptural layering to explore the dynamic tension between the unintentional stroke and the meticulously planned one. Together, these gestures create connection and movement, and her intuitive mark-making reflects her spirit and the humanness of her experiences. Monica is largely inspired by consistent themes of change and evolution from her own personal narrative. As a first generation American with parents born in Cuba and Argentina, she continuously explores her heritage and cultural background in her practice. Monica is based in the lower Hudson Valley outside of New York City where she lives with her husband and two young children. She has been featured in various publications including NY Arts Magazine, the Huffington Post, Westchester Magazine, and Popular Photography. Her work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, Photo LA, Art Market Hamptons, and the New York Mercantile Exchange, among others.
